OVERVIEW
A leading Italian industrial jack manufacturer serving global markets needed a scalable solution to monitor their equipment at customer sites worldwide. Mipu deployed an integrated IoT system combining edge gateways and cloud platform, enabling real-time visibility of all installed units and empowering customers with autonomous monitoring capabilities from first activation through ongoing operations.
INITIAL SITUATION
The client is a Milan-area industrial manufacturer founded over 30 years ago, now operating from a 20,000 m² production facility. The company built its competitive advantage on nearly complete vertical integration, delivering highly customized, reliable industrial jacks used for lifting, pulling, moving, and aligning loads with perfect synchronization across diverse applications.
As IoT adoption accelerated across industrial sectors, the company recognized an opportunity to differentiate through advanced post-sales management. Their existing approach lacked visibility into equipment performance once installed at customer sites. Without real-time data, the manufacturer couldn’t proactively address maintenance needs, optimize product performance, or provide the level of service their global customer base expected.
The company needed a unified system to monitor jack installations worldwide, track operational parameters, and enable both internal teams and end customers to access performance data independently.
THE CHALLENGE
The primary objective was to establish worldwide visibility of installed jack systems through an IoT platform that could:
- Collect real-time operational data from distributed equipment across multiple customer sites globally
- Aggregate information from individual units while allowing site-specific grouping by customer
- Track key performance parameters including activations, temperature trends, alarm generation, rotation counts, and distance traveled
- Provide autonomous access for end customers from equipment commissioning through ongoing analysis
- Deliver a scalable solution compatible with the company’s highly customized product offerings
The technical complexity stemmed from connecting field equipment to a centralized platform while maintaining data integrity across diverse installation environments and customer requirements.
THE SOLUTION
Mipu implemented a comprehensive IoT architecture combining edge computing with cloud-based analytics:
Hardware Deployment: The Davide gateway was installed as a remote unit adjacent to each jack. This edge device captures all available operational data directly from the equipment and transmits it to the cloud platform with minimal latency.
Cloud Platform Integration: Data flows to Rebecca, Mipu’s cloud-based IoT platform, where it’s aggregated and processed. The platform’s homepage provides immediate visibility of all installed jacks across the manufacturer’s entire customer base.
Site Organization: The system enables logical grouping of equipment by customer location, allowing both the manufacturer and end customers to view all jacks installed at specific sites in consolidated dashboards.
Data Experience Development: Custom analytics modules were configured within the platform to track jack-specific parameters. These Data Experiences deliver focused analysis on individual units, monitoring activation counts, temperature progression, alarm events, rotation metrics, and linear distance traveled.
Customer Enablement: The platform was designed for autonomous customer operation, requiring minimal training for end users to access their equipment data and generate performance reports.
RESULTS
The implemented solution delivered a unified monitoring ecosystem with measurable operational benefits:
Centralized Visibility: The manufacturer now operates from a single platform controlling all jack installations at customer sites globally, eliminating fragmented data sources and manual reporting processes.
Customer Autonomy: End customers access the platform independently from equipment commissioning through ongoing operations, reducing support requests and enabling proactive maintenance planning.
Comprehensive Analytics: Automated tracking of key performance indicators provides actionable insights on equipment utilization patterns, thermal behavior, and operational anomalies through alarm generation.
Scalable Architecture: The solution accommodates the company’s growth trajectory, supporting new installations without platform reconfiguration or capacity constraints.
Enhanced Service Value: The manufacturer transformed post-sales service from reactive support to proactive equipment management, strengthening customer relationships and creating opportunities for data-driven product improvements.
The platform’s report generation capabilities enable both internal teams and customers to document equipment performance for compliance, maintenance scheduling, and operational optimization purposes.
