Hydrosim 4.0

MIPU has developed, in collaboration with Alperia Greenpower, an advanced AI-based solution to predict flood waves and support the safe and efficient operation of hydroelectric plants.

The project was designed to anticipate peak water flows downstream of dams, enabling a preventive approach to territorial protection. By forecasting incoming water volumes, operators can take timely mitigation actions and optimize plant operations, balancing energy production with environmental and social responsibility.

As highlighted by Alperia, the solution leverages artificial intelligence applied to meteorological forecasts to predict water inflows into reservoirs. This allows operators to evaluate different intervention scenarios and select the most effective procedures to manage flood events.

MIPU’s contribution

MIPU developed predictive AI models capable of forecasting flood waves with high accuracy. These models support both short-term operational decisions and longer-term optimization of hydroelectric plant performance.

The project shows that data-driven and predictive technologies can be applied beyond traditional manufacturing. It supports sustainability goals in energy production, climate risk mitigation, and infrastructure resilience.

The initiative is a tangible contribution to the adoption of artificial intelligence for advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It specifically supports clean and accessible energy, climate action, and sustainable cities and communities.

The project was presented at the national conference “Ital-IA – Italia Intelligenza Artificiale”, organized by CINI and the Italian National Research Council (CNR), held on May 29–30 at the CNR Research Area in Pisa.

Italian newspaper la Repubblica also featured the project in an article dedicated to predicting flood waves.

Technological reshoring, AI, and digital skills: the future of European manufacturing as seen by Andrea Picozzi, Campari Group

In this interview, Picozzi addresses with clarity the most pressing issues facing today’s industry: technological dependence on non-European vendors, the gap between promises and reality in AI adoption, and the difficult dialogue between IT and production. A perspective rooted in direct experience at a large multinational, but one that closely touches the entire Italian industrial fabric.
